As Valentine’s Day approaches, let’s teach kindness.

To me, Valentine’s Day is more than just hearts, candy and super cute teddy bears. Valentine’s Day is a great opportunity to teach our little ones about LOVE and KINDNESS! The concept of “kindness” or “being kind” is not always one that comes easy to children. In my speech therapy sessions, as well as at home, I find that books can be really helpful when it comes to understanding what it means to be kind. Here are a few of my favorite books about kindness:

  1. Planting Seeds of Kindness
  2. Kindness Rules
  3. Be Kind
  4. A Little Spot of Kindness
  5. The Kindness Book

This year, instead of just signing your child’s name (or having your child write his/her name) on those mini Valentine’s Day cards, encourage your child to think of something kind to say about each of his/her friends! You can ask questions such as, “What do you love most about Michael?” or “Why do you like to play with Sarah?” To make it even easier, see if your child can finish your sentence, “Michael is so…” or “I like Sarah because she is…” These little acts of kindness can go a long way!
